DAVAO CITY, June 24 – Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat feels sorry for the New People's Army (NPA) rebels who can no longer come to the city proper for rest and recreation following the killing of PO3 Alfredo Salva on June 7 at the terminal area.
Rabat said the city had been a safe sanctuary for the NPA, which they abused when they attacked and killed the policeman.
Rabat revealed that her father, the late mayor Francisco Rabat, had an understanding with the rebels to spare Mati from rebel atrocities and they could safely stay in Mati in return.
She said she just continued that understanding with the rebels upon her assumption four years ago.
Rabat was in the city on Friday during the blessing and inauguration of the new five-story regional office building of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) led by Sec. Corazon Juliano-Soliman here.
Rabat also disclosed that the police and military knew and respected this understanding.
“Because of the attack, they can no longer come down in the city. They even wanted to see the Goliath and Teban show at the baywalk. But many policemen and military are now scattered in the area after the attack. So, I’m very sorry,” Rabat said....
